Bond...James Bond

So, you think you know James Bond? So did I, until I picked up a copy of "Doctor No" many years ago. Far from being the self-assured, devil-may-care, wisecracking "Secret Agent" of the films, the literary Bond is a much different person. Described by author and creator Ian Flemming as "vaguely looking like Hoagy Carmichael"*, Bond was a mess. A world weary, chain smoking, hard drinking man who had been around, done it all and worse. Cold, cunning and with a bit of a cruel streak, the "real" Bond was nearing the end of his rope, wondering if being a civil servant in the Service to Her Majesty the Queen was really worth the trouble or the cost.

*Hoagy Carmichael, a famous composer of the 1930s and '40s that's nearly forgotten today. His most famous song, "Stardust" has been recorded by nearly everyone over the past 80-odd years and is regarded as a standard. He should be better remembered. Read more about Hoagy Carmichael Here
