This image is a combination of 2 fantasies of mine. When I first read Anne McCraffey's DragonRider series I wanted soooo much to impress a dragon. Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series also drew me into that world and with the Mage Wars books introduced me to Gryphons. In the Valdemar books, gryphons can only carry a human companion by means of magic. A spell was put on a large basket to make whatever was put into it lighter. However, if a gryphon was large (the size of a drafthorse, say) it may be possible for a human to ride one. Being a Gryphonrider would not be all fun and games, you would have to work for you supper. An aerial scout would cover more ground and be a lot quicker than a squad on foot or even horseback.
