There has been an Urban Myth in North America that the "Big 3" automakers (Ford, GM and Chrysler) have been suppressing technology that allows vehicles to acheive 100+MPG. (Usually in collaboration with the oil companies.) One story is that a prototype with such technology (for testing) mistakenly gets shipped to a dealership in a remote rural location. The vehicle gets purchased by an old farmer/retired man. After several weeks or months the owner brings the vehicle back to the dealership to repair a "broken" gas guage, because it has not registered a change in the amount of fuel in the tank. Shortly after it has been brought to the dealer to diagnose the problem, the owner either wakes up and sees a couple of people doing something to the engine or gets a recall notice that his vehicle has something unsafe and will be replaced by the dealership. In either case the vehicle starts to consume a normal amount of gas afterwards. Read more about it here.
