King Midas earned a favour from the Greek god Dionysus (also known as Bacchus) so he asked that anything he touched would be turned to gold. He soon learned the folly of this wish as it impossible to eat or drink gold. In a tale told by Nathanial Hawthorne (in a book called A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys), Hawthorne relates how Midas turned his own daughter to gold.
